Tutoring

For me, tutoring is a great opportunity to share a little bit about what I know and love about mathematics while helping students realize their mathematical potential.  I enjoy teaching and working with students one-on-one, and I employ a variety of best practices during tutoring sessions.   I will work with your student to figure out what works best with their learning style.  I am passionate about helping students see the beauty in mathematics through mastery of both concepts and procedures.  I typically work with students from sixth grade through early college, and I enjoy all levels of the subject.

My Experience

I began tutoring when I was in high school, and I have been doing it ever since.  I bring 16+ years of tutoring experience and 13+ years of teaching experience to the table.  I taught my first class (as a lab section at the university level) at the age of 19 and never looked back.  I earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics Education in 2012 from North Carolina State University as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow.  After graduating, I moved back to Charlotte, NC to teach high school math. I was named the Most Valuable Teacher at both high schools in which I taught.  As a high school teacher, I taught all levels of math from Foundations of Math I to AP Calculus BC.  I even wrote curricula at the district level for Advanced Functions and Modeling (now Math IV) and Pre-Calculus.  After six years of teaching at that level, I moved back to Raleigh to pursue graduate studies at NC State.  There, I received a Master of Science in Mathematics in 2020 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Ph.D. minor in Mathematics Education in 2022.  During my time in graduate school, I taught a number of different Calculus, Discrete Math, and Linear Algebra courses.  I was awarded both a departmental excellence in teaching award and a university-wide graduate teaching award in 2021.  I am now an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Notre Dame in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics Department.  Last semester, I taught Applied Calculus I and Introduction to Math Methods I.  I currently teach Statistics for Life Sciences and Mathematical Cryptography with Python.

I typically tutor students in middle school, high school, and early college who are looking for support in their current classes (though all grade levels are welcome).  Additionally, I offer services for students who have a semester or summer "off" from their math classes and need to prepare for their next course.  I also frequently work with students who are preparing for the ACT/SAT.

Tutoring Options

We'll connect via Zoom.  I'll use my iPad to project notes/problems onto the shared screen.  You'll send me problems/worksheets ahead of time via email.  I have three years of experience teaching and tutoring virtually.

Additional charge for significant instructor preparation.

3

Group

$50 / hour / student

This option works well for groups of students who are taking the same course in school or for groups of students that are preparing for standardized testing together.  We can do this virtually or in person.

You can also read some testimonials from former students below.

"Ms. Acitelli tutored me in Honors Math 3, Calculus, and the SAT/ACT during my high school career.  During our weekly tutoring sessions she assisted me with homework, miscellaneous assignments, and exam preparation.  She always had multiple angles of approach for when I didn't understand a concept and ensured I fully understood that concept before moving on.  Ms. Acitelli is also very knowledgable on the SAT/ACT material.  She assisted me in raising my scores significantly by identifying the question type(s) I struggled most with to specifically focus on areas that needed improvement.  Ms. Acitelli is also very kind and approachable, making it easy to ask questions and create an enjoyable tutoring environment."
"Dr. Acitelli tutored me for many years throughout high school.  She helped me with various math courses.  I am not a math person and often struggled with the material.  Dr. Acitelli was always very patient with me and ensured I felt confident enough to succeed on tests, quizzes, or homework.  Dr. Acitelli was able to explain concepts to me in a way that I could understand.  I don't think I would have made it through high school without Dr. Acitelli!"
"Dr. Acitelli is a wonderful educator who works tirelessly to meet the individual needs of her students.  She understands that there is not just one way to learn.  She is patient and truly is rooting for her students' success!"
"I'm not one who was good at math or liked going to class.  Her passion for math shows and she really knows how to break it down to where you can really understand."
"Dr. Acitelli tutored me in Calculus AB and BC.  She is extremely helpful in answering questions and going through practice problems.  She explains how to solve an answer, not only by showing the steps and processes, but also explains why you solve something a certain way.  My favorite thing is that she always brings a little whiteboard so I can watch her go through solving a problem.  This really helped me and my learning style.  She taught me lots of little tricks that aided me during exams and quizzes.  She is also very personable and I really enjoyed going to my tutoring sessions.  I ended up earning an A in both Calculus A/B and B/C as well as 5s on both AP exams.  Her teaching/studying style really helped me throughout college as well.  I felt like I learned how to efficiently study through her methods!"
"Dr. Acitelli is patient with me and helped me understand math in a way that I never had before.  Thanks to her, I was able to graduate on time, with an above average grade in mathematics - something I had never done before."
"Catie has made the once difficult task of learning algebra substantially more manageable.  Her individualized methods, even when used in a group setting, had a huge impact on my learning.  It genuinely feels as if she cares about the learning and understanding of those she works with as opposed to just trying to re-word what is written in the textbook.  Can not recommend enough!"
